Social networking website Bebo.com has won exclusive rights to the UK spin-off of Lonelygirl15, the US online video diary that became a massive success on YouTube.
The new video blog, KateModern, launches in July and will tell the story of a teenage university student in London and her struggle to balance her complex social life with "the dark forces that shadow her".
Users of Bebo, the British social networking site, will post messages for the show's characters, exchange plot ideas and upload their own videos to the characters' profile pages.
KateModern will incorporate puzzles and mysteries into its plot for viewer participation.
Advertisers will be able to feature their brands in the video diaries, a practice banned from UK television.
"The nature of the medium allows for the feedback to be integrated into the plot, unlike on television, where lead times and production issues make such interaction impossible," Bebo.com said today.
"This interactive relationship has been credited as a major component of the success of Lonelygirl15 and is an important aspect of the 'KateModern' experience."
Lonelygirl15, which told the story of Bree, a Californian teenager living in a religious family, became an internet phenomenon last year on the video-sharing site YouTube with more than 50m views of 170 episodes.
It captivated internet viewers even when the stories were exposed to have been scripted by three men in their 20s, Miles Beckett, Greg Goodfried and Mesh Flinders, keen to break into Hollywood. "Bree" was revealed as New Zealand actress Jessica Lee Rose.
The trio now refer to Lonelygirl15 as the "world's most popular interactive drama".
KateModern will premiere in July, initially on Bebo.com and then on the Lonelygirl15 website, LG15.com.

It's possible I've missed an announcement here about this, but UK media is all over this story today: http://media.guardian.co.uk/newmedia/st ... 20,00.html

I expected there'd be an official post about it at some point. I don't THINK that was there when I posted the story from the Guardian, but I could be wrong.ShardinsKitten wrote:is the creators doing... they posted about it here http://www.lonelygirl15.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8886

Or if there isn't then I'll bloody well make one!
We'll join forces, and make Britain's biggest ARG.
That'll show 'em.
Really complicated though

I hope it's easier to think of the puzzles than to solve them...!
