Yes, "a house divided against itself cannot stand" and...

then he went to war.
You can call me Juli or LLP, whichever suits your fancy.

check your history; he said that after the war was started.

believe it or not, wars can be started without a president's consent.

"A house divided against itself cannot stand" refers to the fact that, at that time in US history, the states in our union were bickering over the institution of slavery and whether or not the US would keep slavery or abolish it, as attempts at compromises were no longer feasiible. It was generally accepted that a war between the states was coming and couldnt be avoided: although it was not the only reason for the war, by a longshot, it took the Civil War to finally bring a resolution to the question of slavery in the US.

Abraham Lincoln made this prophetic statement in 1858, three years before the start of the Civil War (and before he was President), around the time that he lost a bid to be a senator from Illinois.

History aside, I think that what the original poster wanted to get across was that the infighting that we are now seeing in the trio could lead to their demise. They need to bind together, not to break apart.

Thanks, everyone, for taking this on your own tangent and discussing what Lincoln did instead of seeing it as a valid piece of ad  vice.

Sorry, Kasdeja, but you should have known it would go there as soon as you brought politics into it!

I didn't bring in politics. Duh. I'm sorry I credited who make the quote. Next time I won't so you'll actually read it and see what it means.

I said that it was good advice! Someone else mis-stated the date and said that Lincoln said it after the war had started, and since I'm both a resident of President Lincoln's home state and into history, I just wanted to correct that. I could've put a LOT more info about Lincoln and his statement on here, but I chose to just clarify. There's no reason to get snarky about it. Inaccuracies can cause a lot of trouble, both in the LG15 world and out in the real world.

Honestly, I can't say anything without someone getting upset... even when I'm just stating the facts.

I don't think you did anything wrong. I'm glad you set the record straight (I would have if you hadn't). The only thing I would have done differently is mention that when Lincoln was later told he prophecied the war with that statement, he took offense at the suggestion and insisted he'd intended no such thing.
