jonah
so i think by now everyone agrees that the name jonas is a reference to the biblical jonah. for anyone not familiar with that story, go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonah#The_Story_of_Jonah
so this is my theory about jonas.
god (the order) asks jonah to go help the ninevites (b&d). jonah (jonas) doesn't want to, so he runs away (procrastinates doing whatever the order wants him to do). because of this there is a big storm (??) and jonah (jonas) gets swallowed by the whale (opaphid). jonah (jonas) repents and so god (the order) orders the whale (opaphid) to vomit up jonah (jonas). after this jonah (jonas) goes to ninevah (??) and helps the ninevites (b&d).
thoughts?

hmm...that's pretty in depth. I'm not sure that the metaphor is that deep. The basic lesson in Jonah is that you can't run away from what God wants you to do, so maybe Jonas has the unpleasant task of warning B&D of approaching doom that he's been avoiding.
(I think I'm saying that I'm with you up until the whale.)

I like it, CNG.
And, yes, Gidd, the sacrifice bit would be quite interesting.
You know what? Jonas's parents were lost at sea???
Wow, this is blowing my mind...lol.

And here I thought his naming was relevant to "The Giver".
In it, Jonas is a main character who is 'chosen' for his ability to see things others can't. He is given memories and experiences which allow him to look 'beyond' the population he is surrounded by. While he can literally see more than they can (the population is color-blind, while he is not), he is able to see a system which doesn't allow a whole lot of free will or creativity. Eventually he takes all of this and escapes the community.
I guess it's what kind of protagonist you want him to be.

For the secret of Man's being is not only to live but to have something to live for. Without a stable conception of the object of life, man would not consent to go on living, and would rather destroy himself than remain on earth... –The Grand Inquisitor

Yeah, Soul, we discussed "The Giver" as well about a month ago, but I can't remember the name of the thread. Oh well. Cool that you recognized it as well.SoulAndroid13 wrote:And here I thought his naming was relevant to "The Giver".
