Name meanings

Post by 7Harry7Potter7 »

I'm a newbie so I apologize if this has already been discussed, but here it is anyway. I looked up the name meanings of all the key characters in the story.
Bree: Broth (Umm..I really don't think there is any significance here) but also, strong, spirited. An ancient Celtic goddess
Daniel: God is my judge
Gemma: Jewel or gem, precious stone
Lucy: Light
And this is the most interesting one, I think you would agree (if not the only interesting one)

Jonas: A dove; he that oppresses, destroyer. Variant: Jonah. The name Jonah is used to symbolize someone who brings bad luck.

I've never thought that Jonas couldn't be trusted, and I don't know if I do now, but I thought that was worth mentioning.

Although from the point of view of The Order, Jonas being a destroyer could be a good thing for Bree. Especially if Lucy=light and Gemma=precious stone. They are badnews for Bree and Daniel.

Oh wow. I didn't even think of that! I bet you're right. Just flip it around!
Now, what does the whole "broth" thing mean? lmao

Maybe you're thinking Brigid, the celtic goddess? goddess of flames, one of the tua de danaan?

What's bree short for anyway? Sabrina? Brianna? I've seen both.
...no children are harmed in the making of cakes of light.

It doesn't necessarily have to be short for anything. "Bree" might be her full first name.

maybe maybe, but If you're analyzing names, I'd suggest looking for the most general, then the specific. generally, people who go by "bree" are not given that name. How many people do you know who have the name "Tony" on their birth certificate?

Interesting. How can Jonas mean both a dove (symbol of peace) and a destroyer?

As for broth, I'm at loss, maybe we should all run and check out soup labels.

Do we ever know these characters last names?
Does it matter?

Sometimes a name chosen is just chosen because it sounds good/appealing to the one choosing it. It could be that "Bree" is the name of one of the creators children. Who knows?
~ kageyuki... aka Agent Wasabi

that's all there is to say about that... say anything else and it'll make you look stupid.

She is broth because Jonas wants to cook her and eat her for dinner.

I went to severel websites that gave name meanings, and they all brought up the names Brigid, Sabrina, Brianna. I know that Brianna means strong. All the variations of Brianna mean strong. I think that the website that mentioned a celtic goddess was referring to Brigid. I don't know anything about celtic god/goddesses, but I do remember that Brigid and Bree are very closely related.
I dunno if Bree is short for anything. Bree can be someone's full name, but I think in most cases it isn't.

girlAnachronism: I thought the exact same thing! A symbol of peace that destroys things...hmm...lol. I visited several sites and most of them said "Dove" but a couple did say "Destroyer" or "bringer of bad luck"

I looked up Bree on behindthename.com and this is what I got:

BREE Irish
Anglicized form of BRÍGH
-------------------------------
BRÍGH
Gender: Feminine

Usage: Irish

Pronounced: BREE [key]

Derived from Irish brígh meaning "power, high".

I know a pretty good amount of people who actually named their kids what they intended to call them. Thus, I know a few legal "Chris," "Tim," and "Allie"'s. "Tony" and coincidentally "Bree" is also very common.

Don't forget: Baked Bree ;-)

Jonas could be an oppressor because he's got her locked up ready to grind her bones to make his bread.

Either that or he's just lonely.
