Only two reasons have come to mind so far for making reference to shoes at all either here as a forum heading, or dwelling on it in the video.

• a)So we know hiking boots aren't required, or
  b)To reference Shoemaker Canyon which is just around the corner (about a mile and a half maybe) from here

Still, there could be other reasons yet.

Also the only freind is a dog? Not shoes related but maybe a reference to Coyote Flat which is just there as well.
