National Novel Writing Month

Post by Broken Kid »

So we seem like a pretty creative bunch. Anyone participating in the National Novel Writing Month (www.nanowrimo.org) this year?

The idea is simple: Write a 50,000 word novel in the 30 days of November. You have to start clean (can't pick up in the middle of something) and should end it. Basically, it lets you say you have written a novel (or more of a novella).

I did it two years in a row, but didn't succeed the last two years. I'm thinking of giving it the ol' college try again this year, but I'm worried it will take away from my meandering posts in the LG15 message boards! *worries*

I've had an idea floating around my head for about a decade now, so I doubt I could do it in 30 days. But, like Douglas Adams, I like deadlines. I like the wooshing sound they make as they go flying by. ;)

Check out the nano site. They offer loads of advice about how to write 50k words in 30 days, how to deal with deadlines, etc. The point as I see it is, most people who write have to write regularly (ie every day, pretty much). It's a skill like any other: you have to practice it to be good at it. I know, personally, I'm drastically out of practice. So this forces you to get in practice with a tangible goal in mind.

It gets to be a real bear right around November 12-15. The first 10 or so days aren't that bad. The last week or so isn't that bad. But the middle, when you're running out of ideas and you get busy... that's tough. It's also hard around the holiday at the end of the month. But the feeling when you finish is pretty great! :D

I may resuscitate my old livejournal to post clips and keep track of my word count. That might convince me to keep going...

I'll check out the site. I'm sure it'll be useful regardless of whether I participate or not :)

Oooh. Ages ago I took a Creative Writing class and enjoyed writing very much (although my real passion was poetry). I wrote a few stories and most of them weren't atrocious.
Wow, I'll definitely consider doing this! :D

You should! It's much more fun struggling through it if you know other people who are struggling through it too! :D

Hey, crappy poetry is the basis for emo music. Think of it that way. :D
