The Eye of Horus

Reading Assignment #3: Based on the Image Above

What do you see as you look at this image? There is an eagle or hawk, one eye and a snake symbol towards the end. The eye with two "legs" is similar to the symbol found in Jonas' parents' cabin. When you add the "snake leg" it becomes the symbol for the Order.

The eye of Horus was originally called the "Eye of Ra." Horus is the Egyptian sun god. This symbol is of indestructibility and rebirth. It appears deep in the bandages that wrapped King Tut.

The pupil represents the sensation of light. Some people believe that this symbol contains references to all five of the senses, if one looks closely enough.

There is also a mathematical fraction system associated with and based on the eye, which was used to measure grain, land and prescription medications. This is one reason why the Eye of Horus is thought to have protective power and the power of healing. It is worn on amulets for this purpose.

The "strong legs" beneath the eye refer to strong trees rooted deeply in the earth. The "tail" at the end may be likened to a wheat stalk. The snake at the end was also considered a spiritual symbol.

Because Horus was believed to come in the form of a falcon, a falcon appears in this picture, beside the eye. The eye is also designed to resemble the eye of a falcon.

The "eye symbol" found on American money originated from the Eye of Horus. This is because the Eye of Horus is used as a masonic symbol also, and many of the founding fathers of America were masons.

We will discuss this symbol and other interesting "factoids" about Horus in class next week. Let's leave more in depth discussion for class, rather than in this thread. Thank you.

Set, also known as "Seth" was the Egyptian god of chaos who embodied the principle of hostility if not of outright evil. Although Osirus/Horus was the main god of the pharoahs through most eras, for a time during the third millenium BC, Seth replaced Horus as the main deity of the pharaohs.

The story is that Set warred with Horus for eighty years, during which Seth tore out the left eye his adversary and Horus tore out Seth's foreleg and testicles.

Seth was forced to return the eye of Horus and was himself either castrated or, in some versions, killed. In some versions Seth then went to live with the sun god Re, where he became the voice of the thunder.

In the Book of the Dead Seth was referred to as the "lord of the northern sky" and held responsible for storms and cloudy weather. Seth protected Re during his night voyage through the underworld against the Apophis-snake. On the other hand, Seth was a peril for ordinary Egyptians in the underworld, where he was said seize the souls of the unwary.

Isis is considered the "Great Mother." She was married to Osirus and she was the mother of Horus. Isis worship continued into the 6th Century, after Christ. Egyptologists pronounce her name as "Eeset." Isis is the Greek form of the name. The rose is a symbol used in her worship. Her "color" used in ceremony is a dark red.

Isis married her brother, Osirus, which was a common practice among royalty, to keep the bloodline "intact."

Isis is considered the "Queen of Magic." Priestesses of Isis are believed to have healing powers and to have the ability to interpret dreams and control weather. Braiding hair is used as a magical practice. Co-incidentally, the ancient celts believed that knots could contain magical power.

In the Book of the Dead Isis was described as:

She who gives birth to heaven and earth,
She who knows the orphan,
She who knows the widow spider,
She who seeks justice for the poor people,
She who seeks shelter for the weak people

We have just completed a unit on the Hymn of One Religion Basics. That is why it is so important that each class member take the exam. A grade of zero will bring down your grade significantly. I will be posting student grades (so far) next.

Our class schedule for the next two weeks is still being defined. This is the schedule so far:

I'm leading class as usual, Mondays at 8:00 pm EST.

Wednesday is taught by Haku, resident monk, at 8:00 pm EST.

Kari is teaching Tues and Thurs and 9:00 pm EST.

Friday is free!

Miss. Betsy has had some sudden changes in schedule.

Our next unit is on Science and Magic. We'll be studying Richard Feynman. There may be a short quiz to take by the end of the week.

Starting back in August, I'll be teaching most of the time again.

All material will be posted here, after the grades so far!
