I wonder why they wanted Daniel to film the play in the first place. Surely someone already apart of the Hymn of One would know how to work a camera. Why bring in an outsider?

Because it is Daniel they are after?
I thought this early on but set it aside after he was captured and nothing happened.
Now with the baiting and confusion as well as the little inaccuracies in Jonas' conversation as well as the Sarah character keeping him interested as well as the Alex fling.
Then there is Bree giving them just enough to keep them close but not enough to actually help.

I am starting to question if he isn't the real goal of the ceremony.

I may just be waffling temporarily though.

No. I think it was simply because they knew he was into editing (and had a camera).
