Camp Play: Ceremonial Robes

Post by chershaytoute »

I can't help but wonder about the costuming, robes, or perhaps even period clothing that was being worn. I don't believe the the children were necessarily oddly clothed (they were in modern dress, I think), but the adult was definitely in some type of ceremonial robe.

Why?

I noticed the white connection. And I love the fact that we've had white...and black (and no shades of gray, too, I just realized!)

But I'm wondering why the ceremonial garb while dealing with the children. Was this a one time thing or do they wander around camp like that? Maybe I should've asked Daniel whether any of the folks at the camp were dressed like this when he was there before, huh? But since we discuss (and discuss and discuss!) stuff, I figured I'd throw this open here, so we could talk about it! :D

Diane, the first image that came to mind for me when I saw the robes was Mother Theresa.

I think they are using that type of image. The Hymn of One wants to portray themselves as helpful and kind.

That's a good theory. One thing about that though: do they always wear those robes, or did they just put them on because DB, Jonas, and Sarah were there? And if they did just put them on to appear kind and helpful, how would they have known that DB, J, and S were going to be there?
I'd make you swear on a bible, but I know how contact with holy stuff makes your skin sizzle.

That's it! Thanks Apo, I've been trying to remember where I've seen these white robes with the blue linings before, for the last two days.

I don't think they knew they were there, I think... that's just what they wear, hehe.

Catholic Priests wear a collar, Hindu women wear a bindi, Buddhist monks wear robes, Jewish men occasionally wear prayer shawls... I think it's just a thing. At a religious enclosure like that people are going to be close to their religion. So maybe they wear robes, doesn't seem too strange.

The religion itself, The Hymn of One, seems to take itself very seriously as a real religion and I doubt that members and even people like the person in that robe think it has any connections to things more sinister like The Order.

Impulse -- they looked really familiar to me too, I dunno why. I think it's the blue stripes that remind me of Mother Teresa. O_o

Soooo... yep.

I agree. The HoO dress code is probably decided by The Order, but the actual members of the religion don't know that.

My daughter's in The Society for Creative Anachronism. I kinda think of it as a Renaissance Faire gone completely sideways, since they take a lot of time periods and throw them in the mix. Anyway, her "persona" is ancient Greek, around the time of Thermopylae...about 500 BC. My first thought on seeing those robes was ancient, mythic Greece. Heck, when I just posted my note to Daniel, I said the person in robes looked like something off a Grecian urn.

I guess another huge reasons I'm never once thought Mother Teresa was because after too many years of Catholic school, I can assure you there's not a nun on Earth who wears trousers underneath her habit! <chuckle>

That is what I thought as well, it looks ancient Egyptian to me. And there have been many Egyptian references in the past, so it would fit in with the HoO persona.
That was the weirdest display of geekdom that I have ever seen in my entire life.

My immediate reaction was that the adult was some sort of caretaker. If this is a small Hymn of One commune (as I strongly suspect) it could be that those that are the equivalents of nuns, priests, monks, etc. within the Hymn of One could wear religious clothing, just like in most other major religions, as has already been pointed out.

Also, as for the black clothing vs. white clothing? My personal take (and I apologize in advance if people elsewhere have already come to the same conclusion) is that those within just the front tend to wear white clothing because they really believe the Hymn of One is good and REAL. They have no idea it's a front for anything. Those that are actual members of The Order wear black to portray to the viewers that they are the baddies. In the "Sing with me" video, even though it's probable that the other two in the video are Order members, they were wearing white because they were portraying Hymn of One members. This video is the first example we've really seen of Order propaganda.

I say there are different chapters inside the HoO, those who are just followers, those who are running the HoO and those who protect it. The robes are part of the religion, and must be worn in the religious sanction. But, when in the public, they feel it better to be seen in black as to not to address attention to themselves. It could also be seen as uniform for those who are to protect the HoO.
I prefer S.A.R.A.H. or SARAH.
Always have...even before our friend Sarah entered the picture. And, I love her, but Beastie belongs to someone else! Please don't touch P. Monkey! :smt016
