It's not that folks try to drive when they're on sleeping pills. It's kind of like kids sleep walking...except that they're sleep driving...they don't realize they're driving. Or they don't realize they're sleeping. Or both. Dangerous beyond belief!
It one of the reasons why when my doctors have offered in the past, I have assured them I'd find something else to occupy my time, thankyouverymuchly! <nodding firmly>
Insomnia sucks

I can't believe you wouldn't know that you were driving. That's just creepy.

Joy, just a bit of advice that I've gotten lately: if you're having trouble sleeping, don't drink any caffeine after noon. Believe it or not, it takes that long for your body to get rid of its effects.
Sleepytime tea (right before bed) works pretty well too, especially with honey.
One other thing that I learned in yoga class years ago and that seems to help: lie on your back with your arms by your side and your hands loose (meaning not clenched, no fingers on top of each other, etc.). Start at your toes and mentally talk yourself through relaxing your body parts, one at a time. "Now my toes are relaxing . . . now my feet are relaxing . . . now my calves are relaxing . . ." and so on. Work your way up your body. If you find your mind drifting, go back to where you remember leaving off.
Even if it doesn't relax you, the process might bore you enough to fall asleep.
Hope this helps!
