The funeral

Post by Sami »

Toby said he hadn't seen Jonas since the funeral. I assume he's talking about Jonas' parents funeral. Do you have any idea when this funeral took place?

edited, I said Daniel, and I ment Jonas :/ sorry

Good point about last time he saw Alex.
But Daniel talked about when his parents went missing. Not the funeral

I'm gonna assume u mean Jonas. But good point. That's kinda weird. Would they have a funeral for missing people? Probably not.

Well they went missing at sea, so they were probably presumed dead. So yeah you can still have a funeral, I believe, you just won't be buying a body. The missing can still have gravestones right?

I don't know, honestly. I just think it's odd. I mean, I would just wait in hopes that maybe they really were just lost, and would somehow find their way home. Cause what would u say if they did come back...OMG! I thought you were dead so we had a funeral and got you a gravestone. lol. That would be one awkward convo. lol. But, when did his parents die? How old was he? I can't remember. Maybe it makes sense because if they died more than 5 years ago and he saw Alex and Toby 5 years ago for the funeral maybe they waited a couple years to have the funeral.

Point being...I just don't think you'd jump and have a funeral a week later or even a month later after someone went missing.

It's done more often than not when there's reason to believe they're dead (particularly when lost at sea).

The implication is Jonas hadn't seen Toby in 6 years (6 years was how long he'd said they'd been missing back in his Thanksgiving video).

How do you mean? It just sounds like they haven't seen each other in 6 years to me (like Jonas not seeing Alex since then, though I assume he's had contact with her; not sure about Toby).

I thought people hold memorial services for people who go missing rather than funerals.

I believe that when people go missing their next of kin can declare them dead after a certain time period. I think it's done for any number of reasons:
1. Closure
2. Insurance/Inheritance (say a husband is missing - the wife would have to wait a certain time period before being able to declare him dead and start claim procedures on life insurance, probate of will, etc)

So, if Jonas was his parents next of kin, he could have declared them dead. Except he was a minor at time - so most likely it was the executor of the estate (or whoever had power of attorney - could have been a trustee etc).

Also, I think in this day and age memorial service and funeral are interchangable (at least in the US). It usually has more to do with the famlily and what they want to call it. (Funeral, Memorial, Wake, etc)
We shall nonetheless move forward to carve a name for ourselves in the annals of bold insurgency and death-defying derring-do. Once I have a keen blade at my hip and the Jolly Roger is flapping high above me, I believe I will find my true calling.

In my hand hurts he said that he hadn't seen his aunt since he was 13. Since he is nineteen now, that is 6 years.
That was the weirdest display of geekdom that I have ever seen in my entire life.
