gypsy, i'm hideous at french too, i learned english pretty much cuz i loved it, you see, in classes and all, i was like a dictionary, my friends were always "jo, what does this word means?"
and spanish has some similarities with portuguese, so it's pretty much easy for me

Actually, a majority of the people that work at the resorts and tourists spots speak enough Spanglish that communicating isn't too much trouble. Between the two versions of Spanglish, you can usually get what you want.
I did ok in Italy last week. Managed to order food etc and stay in one piece. Although in one cafe I must have sounded too good, as the waiter started saying a whole stream of things in Italian that went completely over my head!!
Pointing and pictures normally are fairly useful tools.
The only menu in Italy that didn't have the English names was a Mexican. Apart from the names of cocktails, which were all English obviously!! One of which was SexyM*****F***** (without the **s obviously!!).
Clearly the whole world know the English swear words...

Trust me speak ancient greek in greece and they ll look at you funny!!!
Some words are close but still pretty different!!!
