Where as I've never personally been exposed to a flash grenade, I do have knowledge of some pyrotechnics and some explosives.
If it helps to reference, imagine placing the barrel of a 12 guage shot gun next to your ear and pulling the trigger. (Beside your ear, not at your head...)
Also imagine staring at a common road flare or welding arc through a magnifying glass for a breif second.
If it doesn't blind you and deafen you for short periods of time as well as skew your balance temporarily, it will do at least one of them. Being anyone of them alone can be debilitating enough.
This, however, is just a guess.

I was wondering about that at first too, but I don't think its the flash that actually makes you not able to see---its more like the loud noise knocking you off balance.NertTheBert wrote:Well I don't know how flashbangs work but wern't all the bad guys in the elevator wearing sunglasses?
Kinda like in M.I.B. when they'd put on their glasses right before they used the memory killer thing.

Going off what ZeroOrigin mentioned about a flare or welding arc...regular sunglasses wouldn't protect your eyes from that. Assuming they aren't super secret Order sunglasses...which they could be.
