They're different, alright. The first set are blue (though it's pretty dark and hard to tell - good old creators don't like to make things too easy) and the second set are green. I believe they're two different people.

Denial is a wonderful thing. "Completely alone" could mean exactly the opposite. Cassie is really beginning to make efforts to get out and take over, and Bree is still denying her existence.

It has certain similarities to The Da Vinci Code, as you've noted, but the symbology here is much deeper and more varied, and the layers of meaning and double meanings just weren't there in DVC. If The Da Vinci Code was a Bugs Bunny cartoon, this is a combination of Ulysses and Catch-22.
