Term 1/2007: 
Ringing in the New Year with Lessons from Bree

Our objective is to learn valuable life lessons from the actions of others.

We always learn best by viewing examples. Let's begin...

The situation: Wanting to meet secretly with one's father after being separated for some time is a worthy pursuit.

As is wanting this clandestine meeting to go as planned.

As a rule, secret meetings work best when not held at charming cafes on busy thoroughfares.

What have we learned from this?

When planning a secret meeting, resolve to actually meet in a secret location. This will probably allow for the most secrecy.

The situation: Avoiding danger in parking garages.

First of all, a parking garage is no place for a young lady to be spending her New Year's Eve.

There are far more appropriate places to ring in the New Year such as at a supervised dance at a local teen center,

at an inter-generational family party or at one of the many alcohol-free First Night Celebrations (check your local listings).

What have we learned?

Always plan ahead. Trouble and conflict follow those who do not take the time to prepare.

Perhaps if your peer Bree actually put the effort into making suitable arrangements for New Year's Eve,

she could have been spending her afternoon painting her nails fuschia in anticipation of a wonderfully wholesome celebration.

Instead she was nearly run down in a parking garage skirmish involving yet another situation ending in a desperate escape.

Luckily, her two foul-mouthed friends

What have we learned?

If danger is following you, ask your heroic friends ahead of time to accompany you to a clandestine meeting

especially if you know they are going to follow you anyway.

Why force them to go on a convoluted quest of intrigue that involves clue-finding, code-breaking, and calls to dry-cleaners?

Shucks, one could just as easily wander down the hall and give a person a heads up before snatching car keys and credit cards.

And instead of jacking your new friend's car, just ask if all of you could ride together in one automobile.

This is sensible and would definitely save an hour or so (especially for those who could use the extra time to flee from peril).

This will decrease the chance of having to commit various felonious acts against you generous and striking new friend,

plus this opens up the possibility of using the special carpool lane in the case of any high-speed freeway car chases

(which is probably a good idea to keep in mind for those constantly escaping from danger).

To summarize: 
1. plan well 
2. review the idea of secrecy 
3. don't commit easily traceable crimes 
4. share a ride

And watch the language, gentlemen.

And let us wish Bree well.
