Miles has a B.A. in Neuroscience from UC Berkeley and an M.D. from UC San Diego. From 1998-1999, while he attended UC Berkeley, Miles worked as the design editor and writer at the Heuristic Squelch [http://www.squelched.com/staff.jsp], "UC Berkeley's only intentionally funny publication." Miles was working at a Plastic Surgery Internship from Loma Linda University Medical Center when he decided to leave.

After considering work as a consultant to transition out of medicine, Beckett instead decided to produce internet videos. He created a video podcasting company called SHOUTBOY, which produced the internet mini-series "[http://www.shoutboy.com/archives/west_wingers/ West Wingers]," spoofing White House press conferences. He was also the writer, director, and producer of "Star Wards," a medical spoof comedy.

The idea of creating the lonelygirl15 saga was Beckett's. Beckett spent a lot of time on YouTube and noticed that the most popular original content was videobloggers. Beckett imagined creating a story around a videoblogger who people would not know if was real or fake. He met [[Mesh Flinders]] at a karaoke-bar birthday party in April 2006. Flinders had been working on a character, a shy but precocious homeschooled teenage girl, who would eventually become [[Bree]]. When the two met, they decided to collaborate on the project together. Flinders has since credited Miles as the driving force behind the success of lonelygirl15.

Miles says that he's inspired by creativity, the passion of lonelygirl15 fans, people who continue to fight against great adversity, and closing plot holes. If he were not running LG15 Studios, he says he would like to be a professional surfer. Miles has a love for the ocean, and threatens to sail around the world some day, but secretly figures it might be "better in theory."

In the [[First Blog / Dorkiness Prevails|beginning]], Bree's videos were similar to those of many other popular vloggers on YouTube, making brief videos out of her bedroom about her life, her best friend, [[Daniel]], and her conflicts with her [[Bree's parents|parents.]]

Bree was home schooled and lonely. Her only friend, who introduced her to YouTube and video editing, was Daniel, whom she met during a brief [[Poor Pluto|stint]] in public school two years earlier. Daniel's [[Boy Problems...|crush]] on Bree and the [[My Parents Suck...|strictness]] of Bree's parents were a part of the tensions behind many of the early videos.

Eventually, it was revealed that Bree was a member of a secretive religion, originally believed to be [[Thelema]], but later recognized as the fictional [[Hymn of One]]. Selected to perform a mysterious [[The Ceremony (ritual)|ceremony]], she was, at first, ecstatic by the honor, but soon found herself with many unanswered [[I Listened To Daniel|questions]] as to the motives of the [[Deacons]] who [[Life's Not Fair|insisted]] she perform it.

Although, her blogs quickly became very popular, viewers grew suspicious that lonelygirl15 was not real and began to wonder if Bree was, in fact, a real person or if the posts were part of a teaser campaign for a television show or an upcoming movie. Fans pointed to small inconsistencies within the videos as evidence that the story might not be genuine.
