==Background==

When Daniel and Mallory [[Hot Date|go on a date]], Mallory describes her life. She doesn't really remember her birth. In preschool, she liked finger painting and is sad that they had to stop that. In third grade, [[Garett Lovett]] tried to kiss her, and she found it disgusting. In sixth grade, Garett ''did'' kiss her, and she found it amazing. Her freshman year in high school was her best year of her life, when her mother left her father. Her junior year, her heart got broken, though it wasn't by Garett. She is now in junior college.

It was first revealed that Mallory was aware of the Daniel's resistance activities in [[Secrets Revealed]]. In this video, Sarah attempted to sit Mallory down and expose all of Daniels lies to her. Mallory revealed that she already knew of Daniel's activities and had for some time but that Daniel had just recently told her himself. She told Sarah that she wanted to see how serious Daniel was about their relationship and that she understood everything. Although at first, Mallory was not involved in actively fighting the Order, and simply posted videos asking viewers to [[Please Help|help Daniel]] finish his school project, Mallory made her first move toward being part of the resistance by [[A Woman's Touch|flirting]] with [[Chris]] to get information about HoO activity.

Until recently, Mallory and Daniel's relationship had not been under much duress.
Their relationship first became strained when [[Slow Down and Stare|he found out]] Sarah had [[A Woman's Touch|tricked]] Mallory into coming with her to find [[Chris]] and subsequently flirting with him to get information. Daniel was against Sarah and Mallory's methods of getting information, and Mallory accused Daniel of being sexist. Daniel later [[What's Going on?|stated]] he would not be getting over this confrontation anytime soon.

Mallory had become somewhat of a fixture in their new house, which had not bothered Daniel or Jonas. Sarah, however, was not as welcoming. Despite this, and Sarah's attempt to [[Secrets Revealed|expose]] Daniel's activities, Mallory remained, for the most part, kind toward Sarah, and had seemingly begun to [[Carving Pumpkins|win her over]] by early October.

In the video [[Jonas Sucks]] Daniel finds a package in their car. It includes a set of [[Nancy Drew's Guide to Life|Nancy Drew books]] and a note from [[Tachyon]]. From the start, Daniel suspects that this package contains some kind of clue to guide them in figuring out the password to the encrypted file Tachyon had left [[Bree]].

=Semiotics background=
Semiotics is the study of signs and symbols, both individually and grouped in sign systems. It includes the study of how meaning is constructed and understood. It can represent a methodology for the analysis of texts regardless of modality, which is the particular way in which the information is to be encoded for presentation to humans. For these purposes, "text" is any message preserved in a form whose existence is independent of both sender and receiver. Naming the file "semiotics" could signify that the password to the file already exists in what Tachyon sent Daniel. In this way, Daniel and Tachyon need know nothing about each other to be able to communicate what the password is.

When Daniel read the note aloud in [[Jonas Sucks]] he mentioned that it was a haiku. A haiku is a short poem consisting of three lines. It must have five syllables in the first line, seven syllables in the second line, and five in the third. Tachyon's note had five, seven, and ''six'' syllables respectively, so it was not actually a haiku. This proved to be significant when solving for the password of the file.

Another important feature of the note was the x's and y's written at the top and bottom of the message. On the top-left corner there were 11 x's, on the bottom-right 3 y's.

The package contained five books from the Nancy Drew series, including

The file has been uploaded [http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=54391B2B2164E5D8 here]. It is a password-protected .rar file named "53454d494f54494353.rar", which is hex for "SEMIOTICS".

The note from Tachyon pointed to "where it all started" and capitalized "Drew" in "a subtle clue I Drew". This led to the first part of the password, which was "'''stratemeyer'''" because the Nancy Drew series was started by him. Stratemeyer is an 11-letter word--11 was also the amount of x's in the upper-left corner of the note. The number of y's on the bottom-right of the note was 3, so the second part of the password was 3 characters long. 
Another "subtlety" in Tachyon's note led to the second part of the password. Daniel had incorrectly noted that it was composed like a haiku, with the numbers of syllables per line being 5,7,5, respectively. Her note actually had 5,7, and 6 syllables. These numbers, "'''576'''" were the second part of the password.

The Theta is similar to an Egyptian symbol that represents the Sun, and the Mu was derived from the Egyptian hieroglyphic symbol for water. So the Sun equals Ra...and the water equals Naunet? Theta is the 8th letter, Mu is the 12th. So that's one more 12, but the 8 = ?.

Theta was also used as an abbreviation for "Thanatos," and considered a warning of death.
