How legal is it to pm one of the characters (in character of course) to get them to look at a post in the forums? I realize the characters check the forums anyway, but it has come up in general conversation and I'm curious.

It's perfectly fine. It's been done in the past. As long as you're telling them to look at an in-character post in an in-character section of the forum, there's no problem.
