Ok i keep seeing refrences to canon and I don't have a clue. Could someone please tell me what this is about? Or at least point me in a direction to find out.

Canon (note that you spell it with one n,
not two) here generally means that something is considered an official part or fact of a movie series or TV series, as opposed to fanfiction, which is not (hence, fanfiction is "not canon" or "not canonical").
In case of LonelyGirl 15, Bree, Daniel, Jonas and Gemma all are (or were in Gemma's case) official "canon" characters.
OpAphid, Tachyon and Brother started out as fanfiction but were later "adopted" when Glenn Rubenstein(the creator of the characters) joined the production team and all are now considered canon.
Nikki Bower stands in funny place... because of ties to the Creators as well as the fact that she has now been mentioned in one official video, I consider her para-canonical (not confirmed to be canon, but has a significant impact on the canon series with Bree, Daniel, Jonas)
Most everything else is fanfiction (with the possible exception of at least one "new girl", but that's another story

)
Hope that helps.

I said "was" because Gemma is no longer an active player in the series ("was" in terms of time, not canon status). We can dispute whether the Gemma character is actually dead or not, but we can all agree that she is no longer an active part of the series, hence the "was".

Sorry Gjtko, I read it as 'Gemma was canon.' My bad!
