Nah, some parents are just like that. I have quite a few friends who all live home alone while they're parents work in Hong Kong and send home money. They don't give a rat's ass what their kids do, as long as they stay out of their way.

But for the sake of the storyline, I'm going to say his parents were brainwashed.

It's been suggested before that Daniels parents may be part of the Order. That would explain why he had hidden cameras in his room - his parents knew about them all along. It would also explain why give him so much "freedom" when it comes to Bree.
