I would personally think it's served its purpose. They never intended to say "Hey, this real religion is our religion" I don't think. What they meant to do was identify aspects of the religion: egyptian gods used in some ceremonies, magick ritual, etc.

Then, everyone started thinking it WAS thelema and not fictional...and they were going into kidnapping, forcing people to do stuff, etc. So, they had to back up and tell people "No, we're not saying we're thelemites and thelemites would do stuff like this".
