the forum takes a hell of a long time to load when a new video comes out, and half the time i get kicked off the site. isnt there something that can be done about it?

My ability to tolerate my computer's speed at times when out the window last night. LOL Is there something that could be done about the speed here?

Or else something might end up going through one of my walls.

It's been such a long time since we've had this trouble. It's good things are picking up again. Congratulations, Creators. This is the kind of problem you want to have :)

The "standard" way to ensure fast loading at higher serving volume would be caching, however, there is no use caching a forum - the cached page would be outdated immediately, leading to thousands of visitors being served outdated pages. I guess that is the reason why nothing has been done so far.

What would be an option, imo, is making a "light" skin, with disabled quick reply, less images and stuff, that generally needs less database queries and bandwidth (in terms of kbs transfered) than the normal one. Such a skin would reduce the load on the SQL server and file system, as well as needing less bandwidth, since there'd be less images being served. That skin could then be set as forum default when a new video was uploaded, until the flood is over.
Since the default skin is probably a single database position (something akin to phpbb_config -> default_skin), it'd probably even be possible to automate it to mysql UPDATE whenever a certain load average is reached. (But I have no idea of such scripting, so I wouldn't know how.)

In addition, if it isn't enabled yet, HTTP compression could possibly be used to use the available bandwidth more efficiently.

well another video and another night of slowness. im sorry to sound bitter, but this really gets under my skin.

i would just like to know if something is being done or is in the works to help correct the slowness (if something can be done at all) of the site when a new video comes out.

thank you for your time.

The easiest way for them to fix the problems would be to buy more bandwidth and/or a faster host box. So, if the speed really bothers folks that much the best solution is probably to just send them more money.

No hitting with a mackerel, Cloud. I'm allergic... <rueful grin>

But in keeping with my taking lemons'n'making lemonade philosophy... There IS one plus side to this. It slows down the spambots at the same time it slows down the rest of us. Of course, I felt kinda like an old lady with a walker last night chasing around a 'bot with run-down batteries for a bit one night...it was hilarious. I'd get ahead, I'd get behind, I'd get ahead...but I finally ran 'em all down... <running around singing Rocky theme song...walker in the air in champion gesture>

I've managed to avoid these problems by subscribing to the podcast. Just go into iTunes or whatever podcast aggregator you like and download it without having to load the front page at all.

Of course, if you have to meep on the comments, then that's another matter entirely.
