Although I don't see why it matters whether it was a rifle or not, I completely agree about the echoes thing. There should have been more, if it was actually a gunshot. However, Bree's father was NOT killed in the garage. At the very least, he is alive and able to stand up when we last see him, so I think it's erroneous to assume that he is dead.
he is hunched over in the very last shot of them right before jonas gets in the car. the guy standing there isn't her father. He's wearing no hat. Looks more like the silhoette of the deacon.

He's hunched over, yes, but he's still on his feet. He's not prone on the ground, nor is he slumped over the hood of a car, or in any other position that might indicate that he is even unconscious. That's what I mean.

Just a thought, re: gunshot realism and such.
Okay. So it sounds like a (probable) gunshot, just from further away - not loud enough, and so forth.
So could it possibly have been Brother, elsewhere but nearby, shooting Gemma? Since that matches the other information we have. And Gemma isn't present, despite the Brother and Tachyon vids.
The gunshot would be loud enough to hear without being the deafening blast one would expect. Bree would still likely look back - and, possibly, protest her dad being taken away (especially if she /thought/ he'd been shot, if he was doubled over).
Uh...yeah. ^^
Edit: Whoops, never mind. This has been addressed in the Gemma V thread. ^^

It matters if it is a rifle or not because realistically you would not have a long range sniper pistol with a scope that would just be ridicules
"ohh ohhh also the cross hairs thingy could be a computerized sniper rifle a bomb,....or just something pretty brother decided to put on there to make us freak.............. "
was placed just to point out(sarcastically) that we dont have enough evidence to truly make a conclusion about it so we shouldnt speculate as was the suitcase comment
and I just use the punctuation to show that I am pausing for reflection
sorry that it bothers you
EDIT:that sounded like I am an arse so sorry also you can die from a wound a few minutes later after the actual injury.........he could have been in the process of losing blood............ but really that is all just a load of speculation also

what stuart is trying to point out is that it could not be brother shooting gemma as it is a pistol firing. Not a shotgun. A pistol is more close range, and a rifle is a long range. If the video is correct, it seems to say that tbrother is shooting her at long range.
Hence....why whether it is a rifle or a pistol is very important in knowing who was shot.

thanks I kept sounding like an ass and not really making my point when I tried to say that..........

no prob stuart...
and why would someone who is shot be unconcious (unless he was shot in the head)? its possible he is still very concious, just shot.
also, it doens't make sense that anyone else was shot. after the gun shot bree screams "No Daddy"

yea living in the ghetto and seeing my fair share of people getting shot, i know a bit about people and how they react when they are shot...
most of the time, no screaming, no passing out...just shock like: "omg i'm shot...i'm going to hold the wound...someone mind helping me.". Sometimes people are silly and their brains are too smart for their body and it jsut shuts the nerves down and they can't feel it...
its kind of neat...

It's because their bodies go into a shock mode and they can't feel it.
