From what I remember from my grammar school education, the way of working out which to use is to remove the other person from the sentence and then to see if the sentence still makes sense.

Well Jamesy..
Sorry to be gone for so long. I have been working.
My father is an English professor with 47 years experience. He has a PhD. I can check in with him to see if he'll resolve this, OK?
I'll call him now, even...

I would be interested, as it's always bugged me as to which one to use. Most sentences are quite easy, but statements are trickier imho. People at work always ask me about apostrophes, so it's nice to talk about personal pronouns instead!!Marbella wrote:Well Jamesy..

Daddy says this: "We have to assume that it's a non-derivative. In other words, with no verb, one must assume that the fragment in the caption is the subject."
Let's eat the popcorn.
Let us eat the popcorn.
Us= Object, therefore the sentence is grammatically incorrect.
However, it is in common usage.
Kris and I are at the Halloween Ball.
(a linking verb is needed, which is "are.")
"This is Kris and me at the Halloween Ball," makes the sentence subjective on both sides. Therefore, it is incorrect. The linking verb "is" makes the difference.
