HighLights is still around!?!?!? <3333333333 I used to get those when I was a kid!!

I think I can do all the DNA stuff, I'm just not sure if I did that first thing correctly. The answer doesn't seem to make any sense. And what about the book?

I hope we can get the pics soon :)

But I'm stuck there, so I gave up. Anyone else try something?

So i've been trying to find the book somewhere, anywhere. I was really hoping that i might find it in the school library but seeing as how the library really isn't finished being revamped, their selection is next to nothing.

Anyways, I typed the ISBN number into amazon and found (most likely) the same book just a different title. It was found to be: Widening the Scope of Chemistry: Plenary and Invited Lectures and Selected Contributions Presented at the Eighth International Conference on Chemica (Hardcover)
by Yoshito Takeuchi (Editor) (the title we received was probably the short hand for the library.)

Sadly the book is not available on amazon, half.com, ebay and bookfinder. I have no idea where this book may be. Bookfinder has stated that from a thrid party source, the book is still in print and yet none of the stores it looked through had it. I have to stop searching for a moment because i have yet another class to go to.

Oh how I despise having 5 classes in a day....

This just so totally confused me. How did you get Q??? There is no Q there.
I don't understand how you did this.

Anyway
My main question is do we count the spaces?

Also, How do you know where to put 1 3 5 3 6 2 and 7 to begin with?

Scroll down to my post at the bottom of the page; this should explain how to use the decoding numbers to get from a DNA/protein sequence to a message. Deagol has also put together a good explanation of this in another thread.

I don't think that IKYOIYK represents chemical elements (for that matter, I don't think that it's amino acids, either) - my hunch is that it's a vignere cipher key for some text that we have yet to obtain.

Oh my goodness thank you. I get all fuzzy-brained looking through the forums.

I know that the vigenere theory is popular (and probably right). I'm worried we missed something by not getting the book. :?
Walter sounded as if we had all we needed.

Some of us were discussing the possibility yesterday that the DNA sequence that we need is located in the library where the catalog card came from. We already know that it isn't in the book itself (thank you, random student working in the library!), but it could actually be in the catalog drawer where the card came from.

Has any one checked to see if Princeton Chemical Library even has a card catalogue?

Well we had that thought (ok he had the thought) that maybe he just used that as a scrap of paper, like the library had used the old catalog cards as scraps of paper for people to write on to find books.

I thought that maybe the only reason that book was used was this is more chemistry based then DNA based considering that it sounds like he is telling us what is in the vials.

I dunno, in other news he's trying to take pics right now. But the camera he is using isn't the best (it auto focuses) and it's not wanting to focus enough on the card to actually read it. So yea. but we'll have pics shortly.

I am not sure I understand why everyone is so sure it is a DNA sequence we are waiting for.
We have not been destroying DNA. This is chemistry.

One thing that's a bit funny is the +28 instruction... if Walter was using his usual technique, this would be +2. Maybe the offsets aren't alphabetic? Offsets in the periodic table maybe?

Oh, hi everybody. I've spent the last couple of days catching up with what you've been up to, these puzzles really are quite fiendish!

ETA: The "obvious" way to apply the offsets to elements doesn't work, as the 4th letter is O, which is element 8, and the 4th offset is -16. I doubt this is meant to stand for anti-Oxygen :-)

ETA2: The one-letter elements are B C F H I K N O P S U V W Y. There's 14 of them, so the chance of a random 7-letter sequence only containing one-letter elements is approx. 1/76, which is somewhat unlikely. Not that Walter's letter sequences are random...
