Nah, there's a little ad in the window of the AIM client, but nothing invasive. At least that's how it was as of a few months ago - I use Trillian to connect to AIM now, but no reason to get too complicated at first.

Ok, so here is a link to aim for anyone who wants to try it. I just downloaded it, and I'm giving it a test drive :)

I installed AIM. The biggest challenge, like you said TOSG, was choosing a user name that wasn't already taken :P

I'm not sure how the chat rooms work. It looks like a new one is set up each time you decide to do a chat, that they aren't permanent, and that you have to be invited to join? Correct me if I'm wrong.

One of the advantages I see with IRC, is that the room is a permanent installation, and anyone can join, if they can survive the registration process ;)

I don't know about -actual- AIM, but with iChat (the software for Macs) all you have to do is go to File-->Go to Chat-->(type in chat name)

If the chat exists, it will take you there, and if it doesn't, it creates it, and then anyone is free to join if they know the chat name.

well...i'm not really involved in this,
but I would like to remind people that we have a main chat on the main page, and it's very easy to sign up and create a room.
I highly encourage people to use it for anything like this.

I believe that is how it works. I do have an older version of AIM though. I know that one day my friend went to a random chat name and we accidentally "walked in" on someone elses conversation. So I believe if you know the name then anyone can enter.

You guys should pick a General name that everyone will know. Something that other people won't accidentally use.

I honestly like the idea of using AIM for the game. I want to join in but I can't figure out IRC to save my life :(

It's one of the options we're looking at and would be a no brainer if not for the obvious technical issues. The site bogs down with activity and user created rooms disappear if inactive for more than 2 minutes.

I would love to be able to use the onsite chat. I agree with the need for the game to be inclusive rather than exclusive, and having it on the site could really facilitate that. I just don't want to have someone in the field, who needs direction being hung out to dry because a new video loads at the same time our drop is going down, and the server crashes. We need to safeguard ourselves from that sort of occurance.

I use GAIM, which supports AIM, MSN, IRC, and a bunch of other chat protocols. Plus no ads. You can get it from http://gaim.sourceforge.net/

I've tried the LG15 chat once and it slowed my computer down, and eventually made my browser crash. I prefer IRC.

I have no preference. I'm so helpful.

Are we afraid that Walter will start asking for sexual favors in return for answers to puzzles? :smt042 :smt043 :smt044

Oh Lord... the poor man is 87! :D
I want to make sure that the newer players understand that at this moment we are only looking for a way to fluidly handle the upcoming drop (and any future drops). Our problem solving has always been done here on the forum with input from everyone and anyone who wants to jump in.

Ok, Personally, I think it's ridiculous to let problems with the OpA ARG taint a perfectly good ARG that is just getting off the ground.

So here's what I'm going to propose. We have a drop coming down imminently, and we need to be ready to roll. We don't have a lot of time to evaluate and test our options. ShardinsKitten has graciously set up a perfectly functional chat that is publicly available to anyone who wants to participate. I suggest that this time around we use it. It is up and running, several of us have already logged in. We can do an evaluation after the drop of how well it went, and if we need to make changes for future drops, but since there is no consensus for an alternative, and we already have an IRC room set up. I think we should go with it for this drop. I'm willing to make sure a link and installation instructions are available on both the drop thread and the LGpedia page. Any objections?
