Swearing

I think swearing is a substitute for more appropriate, descriptive, and thought-out words.

I'm sure I'll get sweared at for saying this- but it's my opinion!

i agree, to an extent.

does anyone else find it rediculous that society considers bitch a curse word? because to be quite honest, it is the only adjective that properly fits a large percent of the female population.

I was just laughing, the other day, at how I didn't curse the first two weeks I had my job..and how hard it was. Once my boss did it, all hell broke loose in my mouth. I am reminded of Ralphie from a Christmas story saying, "In the heat of battle my father wove a tapestry of obscenities that as far as we know is still hanging in space over Lake Michigan." That is the kind of epic jumble that is emitted from my pie hole about 30-40 times a day. Plus, I drive all day, which only makes it worse becuase I'm screaming at other cars the entire time.

i drive all day too and i find myself with road rage...i swear then! i try not to around my nieces and family but sometimes it slips out. so i guess you can say, yeah, i do swear but not very often.

I see both sides of the conversation here. There are times when swearing can be and is deemed appropriate. I probably swear the most in extreme moments: excitement, surprise, anger/frustration, pain, etc. When I was younger, my parents tried to watch their swearing around me (to the point "hell" was a curse word - but we referred to it as "H-E-doublehockeysticks!").

I never swore until high school. Now I use (what I consider mild swear words) "crap" and "damn" without a thought, unless, as Kas and Skydive pointed out, I'm in a situation where the clean mouth needs to be in use. I will say that I'm not comparable to a sailor...but do find times to drop the F bomb or a few other choice words.

Buttercup, I used to agree with you! I thought the potty-mouthed bunch were lazy and incapable of thinking up clean and intelligent alternatives to those words we shall not speak of. But now I'm about as bad as the rest of them. *shrugs*

So I grew up with a mom who dropped the f bomb in every other word.. (still does to this day in fact)

But it had the opposite effect on me for a while.. I rarely ever used it.. Just until a few years ago....But now it looks like my mothers bad habit has caught on.

Of course, I still know when to use it, and definently when its not appropriate. But there are just sometimes when they shoot out of me like a shotgun. And yes Im guilty of road rage as well.

I think swearing is appropriate in certain situations, though I admit I do it too much. When I get in arguments with my parents, I find that saying "I worked my butt off" doesn't cut it. What I say is "I have been working my f***ing ass off!" because that is the truth. Swearing should be like an exclamation point; something used to denote extremity in a certain case.

my mom still chastises me when i say things like "crap" or "sucks" around her.

i don't cuss often, but i have to admit that i say f**k wayyy too much. i just love the fact that it can be used as a noun, proper noun, adjective, AND a verb. asbsolutely amazing.

Eh... I usually substitute curse words with stuff like...

crap...crud...darn...fudge...heck...

and stuff like that


My parents don't like me using the word freakin though....Yet I still use it and my mom always goes...

When I am just hanging around my friends I wont worry about what I say. I am not going to say a swear word every other word but I just dont watch myself. But around anyone younger than 13 or someone I respect and call sir or ma'am I do not utter one swear word.

Oh holy hell, I curse like a harpy. But I'm good at holding myself back when needed.

I cursed a lot when I was in the army. I've gotten out of the habit and rarely do anymore. I know I shouldn't, but I tend to get a bad impression of people who curse in casual conversation. I know I shouldn't, but I can't help it.

I swear very rarely in public, and only when the situation really demands it. I think that swearing should be necessary only in extreme situations, when milder words can't convey the emotion or don't properly describe the circumstances. That said, I do curse at the TV a lot when I'm alone, especially when I'm watching a football or basketball game and my team is losing .

Wow, my husband was just medically retired last year at the ripe young age of 26. From the Air Force that is, Also I have a brother in the Navy. So yeah..I picked up a bad mouth for a while there. Ok. so I still have one. I do try to control my language. depending on where I am and the situation. I have a two yr old son, and well when he comes off with S**T in public. It's not good.
