The only difficulty with all this speculation is that the actress who played Gemma has left the show to go on to other venues. We're not getting her back, so we can pretty much forget the character of Gemma except for influences she has had from the past.

Actually, Jackie (the actress) didn't leave for "other venues" (meaning other, better work) -- she went to school. Presumably she will have school breaks, or summer vacation, and will be available for more work at those times.
