Tachyon used a V. Cipher before, right? Safe to assume it's the same kind this time?

Most ciphers only use letters for keys though, and the l33t translation part makes me think it's #s that equal "7" translated back into text (if that makes sense).
It makes a lot of sense.
I'm trying to figure this one out, but there's very little to work with! >_<

Recap post edited to include deagol's revelation and covedweller's very helpful review of the Craigslist directions.

Something's been bugging me for a few hours and I finally found out what it is.

Dogstar = Keanu' Reeves band.

But I had read it somewhere else in relation to the Breeniverse before. Something I had looked up. And I found it. Again, not sure if it's anything, but I wanted to post it.

The Ancient Egyptians divided the night sky into 36 groups of stars, star-gods or constellations, known as decans, which rose above the horizon at dawn for a period of ten days every year. The dog star Sirius (goddess Sopdet, Septet) was the most important one.

decode 4 key / coded into leet speak it equals 'T'

In leetspeak, T equals 7.
Well it equals 7 in its numeric/leet form and then you can de-leet it into letters right?

Okay...indulge this newbie because I'm trying to wrap my head around the whole clue thing and figure out that "chain"...

Tachyon posts a clue in her profile, movie line references to John Cusack and a URL, which takes us to a craigslist post. There's a double purpose here.

The craigslist post is a has more movie references: Mallrats (and the number 5), Keanu Reeves (guy in a band, made a movie in the mid-90's (Chain Reaction) and a hint about repeating a line from the trailer. From the trailer, we get the line, "So that's you do it? Backwards."

Ahh, but another double (triple?) purpose here...the HTML coding in the post reveals another code...and a hidden file. That hidden code, along with the advice from the post (from the trailer about doing things backwards) tells us how to decode (via a 5-step process) the data in the hidden file.

The hidden file, once decoded properly...is part of a diary or letter that mentions Disneyland and a sister.

But, going back to Tachyon's profile, we have some leet code...and we're trying to figure how that fits in..

Am I all caught up?

Yeah. That's pretty much it.

The format of this seems kind of like the music mash-up was but it's more interesting seeing how it's coming together.

We have lots of code for the code breakers.

Lots of searches, collective knowledge pop culture stuff, etc. for the lurkers and less hardcore.

And wouldn't you know it? We have to work together to solve it (and yes, even watch that movie trailer!).

So we just need the code now.

I think Alysaface is into something in the other thread. So all credit to her!

if T is 7 in l33t, we need something that equals 7.

Who is Tachyon's message to?

10033

(according to that wiki article on The Culper Ring, with Agent 355 it's three-five-five, not three hundred fifty five).

So 1 + 0 + 0 + 3 + 3 = 7

10033 in l33t = IOOEE decoded.

Can anyone try IOOEE as a key?

So you would take the text file ("havefun") and decode it in this order (reversed per instruction):

HEX to ASCII
base64 to ASCII
binary to ASCII
Ciper (IOOEE as key)
HEX to ASCII (again)

Can someone please confirm this?

we didn't do it right the first time and it made this so much more confusing by skipping ahead and trying to hack it.

some of us just wanted to make sure and play fair!
