I did a little research, and it turns out that dopamine, seratonin, and neuroephinephrine (or adrenaline, depending on the research) are not only the happy/sad catalysts, they're also used in the treatement of depression and anxiety. Problem is, when they're artificially "levelled up", so to speak, when you come off 'em, your body makes less of them. Also, interestingly, those three levels are higher in people with addictions. The spike in those chemicals is what gives the "high". (And, interestingly enough as a sidenote, it's what gives Xstasy its kick.) And blood sugar levels can affect the take-up of the chemicals. (Lower blood sugar, more of an effect.) Given Crowley's dances with addictions, this doesn't seem all that random. So if they were making Bree diet, her blood sugar would be lower. Therefore making the takeup of such shots -higher-. And if they were giving it to her for an extended period of time, to build up her tolerance, when the date of the ceremony came and they gave her a BIG dose, it wouldn't kill her, but *would* make her nice and placid and pliable and happy, without giving her anything that the police could detect as being unnatural. Plus, that could explain why she was so dopey about Lucy -- those drugs also can be responsible for chemical "love", or that love-at-first-sight feeling -- so she would be at ease with her attackers, possibly even willing to participate because it just felt so "right" to her, due to the chemically-induced lovefest. They wouldn't cross over the blood-brain barrier. That's why there are drugs such as SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors)--they keep the brain from reabsorbing the neurotransmitters as quickly. But, yes, an abundance of these neurotransmitters can produce euphoric feelings, but in high doses you get adverse effects. For example, Parkinson's disease is related to a high level of dopamine. There is a fine balance. I doubt the shots they are giving Bree are anything like what you are talking about because, as I said, that's not really possible. The closest you could get is to give her Lexapro or Zoloft (SSRIs). :) Even then, it's a cummulative effect--not something that you would see a markedly increased change in after one shot if you had not administered them for a while. I think you had a good idea, but it's not really feasible. It's confusing stuff. Of course, to incorporate your theory, perhaps this is why they have been giving her pills for so long. The only problem is that SSRIs don't necessarily make you cheerful--they just keep you from getting depressed. Who knows at this point! Good theories, though. For a very long time I was depressed and for no reason. It got really bad. You know, like the TV commercials about depression and how it hurts physically and emotionally and it not only hurts you, but it hurts others around you? Well, it was like that for me. After going to a bazillion doctors I was finally diagnosed with an autoimmune disease of the thyroid glad (that's the glad in your neck). My body's immune system was attacking my thyroid and killing it off. This meant that all the hormones that my thyroid normally produces to keep me healthy and happy, weren't getting produced. I became very physically ill as a result and one of the other symptoms was clinical depression. The hormones from my thyroid that tell my brain to make serotonin and dopamine and all that good stuff, just wasn't happening and it was causing me to become depressed. Pills used to treat clinical depression don't often work on people who have depression from a low thyroid. Instead, thyroid hormone replacement was the answer. First they put me on a synthetic medication. That didn't work well and I was still depressed and physically ill. Then they put me on a natural one called Armour. It did the trick and now I feel like my old wonderful self again. No more depression, no more illness. My whole point with this is that if you are very tired, cold, gain weight and are depressed, go have your thyroid checked by a doctor. It doesn't hurt, it's a simple blood test. And my other point is, if you already have a low thyroid and you're on a synthetic medication and you still feel horrible, ask your doctor to try putting you on Armour. If your doctor refuses to put you on Armour (some doctors are funny about that), go to the Armour web site and find a doctor in your area that will prescribe Armour for you. It makes all the difference in the world! So many people think they just have typical depression that can be corrected with SSRIs and other medications.
