People within the religion will probably disagree with what I'm going to say - I mean no offense to anyone on here - I believe in live and let live. Worship whomever you want to and believe whatever you want to (just don't insist I believe it too). That being said... Many decades ago, L Ron Hubbard published self-help type books (and science fiction novels) that claimed to contain scientific methods for improving your life. The science behind his therapies was proved to be flawed and courts told him to stop presenting the information as science. The religion angle helped him continue to promote his ideas in the guise of rituals as opposed to scientific fact. The church was very lucrative and tax exempt which was an added bonus. Over the years, Scientology has taken on a life of its own and Hubbards ideas have grown into a large religion. Many current members don't know or don't care to know their religion's history and therefore just accept it as it is presented. Scientology also went through a period of suing and harassing anyone they thought was trying to speak against them. There was an official 'list' of individuals sanctioned by the church that members were supposed to go after by any means.
