I think it is because of the way international news is reported on TV and in the newspapers... Australia is a big country geographically, but most of the population lives on the coasts, and depends largely on import/export (with a bit of local industry, too, of course). And they are 'young' in the sense that many people there have strong family ties overseas in recent generations. Australians consume the world's culture (including U.S. movies) much more than we do theirs.
